BAMBERG, Germany (September 16, 2014) - After nearly 70 years of U.S. military presence in Bamberg, Germany, the colors of the U.S. garrison in Bamberg have been covered and the American flag has been lowered. again for the last time on September 12, 2014.

Kathleen Y. Marin, Regional Director of Installation Management Command Europe, and Col. Christopher M. Benson, USAG Ansbach Commander, spoke at the ceremony, which took place in front of the USAG Bamberg Headquarters building.

"While we are closing this city today, the American relationship with Bamberg is not over," Marin said. "This will continue thanks to the kindness of the Americans who decided to stay in Bamberg after leaving the service. But more importantly, our relationship continues because there are thousands of regional workers who work in Bamberg, or hundreds of thousands of American workers and their families who live here. It's a home away from home."

Bamberg became home to the United States in April 1945, when American soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division and the 45th Infantry Division liberated the city after a brief battle at the end of World War II. Since then, the garrison has hosted the US police, the 1st Infantry Division, and thousands of soldiers and families, as well as civil servants and city employees.

For nearly seven decades, many Americans have lived in Bamberg, and many Americans are also from Bamberg, as noted by Marin.

"Just as John F. Kennedy declared himself a Berliner, thousands of Americans can claim to be Bambergis, as confirmed by their birth certificates," Marin said.

The closing at USAG Bamberg was the first of two in two weeks in the Franconia region of Germany. USAG Schweinfurt is scheduled to host a closing ceremony on Friday.

Marin said "Our country has asked us to protect the resources of this difficult time in the history of our country, and we have accepted this challenge in the military across Europe - in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy," Marin said. "As part of this change, service members, their families, and staff at various installations are being asked to complete a self-service call that is responsible important."
