WASHINGTON — The U.S. Army on Tuesday selected General Dynamics Land Systems to build a light tank to improve mobility, protection and direct fire capabilities for infantry brigade combat teams.

The production agreement is an important step for the Army Futures Command, which has promised faster and more successful modernization programs with a competitive prototyping approach.

Is The Mobile Protected Firepower A Light Tank? The Army Says 'no'

GDLS will initially deliver 26 vehicles, but the contract allows the Army to buy another 70 during low-cost production for another $1.14 billion, the Army said.

At least eight of the 12 prototypes used during the competition's evaluation will be updated for entry into force, said service officials responsible for the competition.

The first production vehicles are expected to be delivered within 19 months. The first unit will receive the battalion's MPF systems — 42 vehicles — by the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. The Army plans to implement full-scale production by calendar year 2025, according to GDLS.

"The MPF demonstrates the Army's determination to accelerate acquisition and use all the new approaches and new authorities necessary to modernize," Army Acquisition Chief Doug Bush said at a June 28 media roundtable.

He noted that this is the first major platform to move from prototyping to production under the Army Futures Command, which relies on new rapid prototyping agencies.

"This program is leading the way in this field, and prototyping is not easy. There is a lot of work to be done when you go into low-volume production and then go through operational testing," he said. "But I'm very motivated by the work."

The Army expects to spend about $6 billion on the MPF program through the acquisition phase, according to Brig. gen. Glenn Dean, program executive for the Land Warfare Systems Service. The life-cycle cost of the program, including maintenance, military construction and personnel, is estimated at approximately $17 billion.

The Army plans to purchase 504 vehicles, which are expected to remain in inventory for at least 30 years. Most of the procurement is due to be completed by 2035, Dean said, adding that the MPF program remains on schedule and on budget.

The MPF capability will be organized by battalion, but deployed as companies "generally" at the brigade level, Maj. Gen. Ross Coffman, the commanding officer in charge of vehicle modernization, said during the same roundtable.

GDLS and BAE Systems - selected in 2018 to build prototypes - competed to produce the MPF. Reports earlier this year indicated that the service had already been chosen, and BAE withdrew from the competition months before announcing the winner.

At the time, Bush said the military evaluated both vehicles fairly and thoroughly, but did not address reports that the military had decided on a winner. Dean declined to discuss the selection process during Tuesday's roundtable, citing the sensitivity of the contest.

The two prototypes are quite different. GDLS introduced a new, lightweight chassis, a high-performance package and advanced suspension, with a turret and the latest version of the anti-fire system found on the Abrams main battle tank.

Army officials said the service chose to move forward with GDLS because it offered the best value. According to Dean, the cost, maturity and production readiness of the system.

In 2021, the companies were tasked with delivering the prototypes for military vehicle evaluation with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. fight this opportunity.

GDLS brought Soldiers to the assessment in January, months before BAE Systems grappled with production delays due to the coronavirus pandemic. Soldiers completed the assessments in early August.

In the fall of 2021, the prototypes competing for the light tanks moved to testing for a limited number of military users, including live firing of the system, which marked the final step before the service chose a winner.

"The Soldiers that the Army selected for the [Soldier Evaluation] were tankers, so when they started the evaluation last year, they were familiar with the Abrams tank and immediately saw a commonality in the look, feel and operation of the turret. Today, the Abrams tank," GDLS director of U.S. business development said. Tim Reese on Defense News on June 28. "It doesn't take much training to get them up to speed."

Reese said the company also included the commander's independent thermal imaging, which was not originally a military requirement.

He said the company developed its vehicle in a development capacity, "we think the implementation of the program will be a desire to improve things or add capabilities," and that GDLS made some changes to the vehicle after contacting the soldiers.

"One of the things the Soldiers really wanted was an easier way to remove and rotate the track skirts so they could go in and clean and adjust," Reese said.

"We made some changes to the seals around the hatches based on their feedback. We learned a few things about the cooling system," he said. "There are things today that are as good or better than when we came in. Production at a lower rate than the first 12 we built for the competition."

In a statement to Defense News, BAE Systems said the company "while not selected to move forward with the MPF tender, we will take the innovations and lessons learned from our solution with us and apply them to future modernization efforts."

At the AUSA 2016 Annual Meeting, Geral Dynamics unveiled the 120mm Griffin Technology Demonstrator (TD) as a "conversation starter" for the US Army's Mobile Protected Firepower (MPF) program.

The MPF is a light tracked vehicle designed to provide large caliber direct fire for the infantry brigade combat team. The Griffin chassis I have shown at AUSA is from the British Scout SV program (now called Ajax), but it only has six track wheels. The cast aluminum turret is armed with a 120mm XM360 light gun, developed by the Army Research, Development and Development Cter. The XM360 gun was developed as part of the canceled Future Combat Systems (FCS) program.

The Griffin II is proposed under the Army's Mobile Protected Fire Force (MPF). To meet the program's caliber requirements, it incorporated a 105 mm caliber M35 gun and a redesigned chassis.

The M35 was originally designed and developed by Beth Laboratories, Watervliet Arsal in 1983 for the Marine Corps' mobile protected rifle program. It was later incorporated into the Army's M8 Armored Rifle System light tank, which was discontinued in 1996.

In June 2022, GDLS won the Mobile Reserve Firefighters program and was awarded a contract worth up to $1.14 billion.

Griffin III debuted at the United States Army Association in Huntsville, Alabama.

It was proposed under the Army's Optional Manned Combat Vehicle (OMFV) program as a rear-mounted option for carrying six fully equipped infantry. This version, although similar to the Griffin II, reduced the main gun from the 105 mm caliber to the 50 mm XM913 gun system. It will be equipped with IMI systems, the Iron Fist Active Protection System (APS) GDLS will initially deliver 26 vehicles, but the contract allows the Army to buy 70 more.
