WASHINGTON — The U.S. Army on Tuesday selected General Dynamics Land Systems to build a light tank to improve mobility, protection and direct fire capabilities for infantry brigade combat teams.

The production agreement is an important step for the Army Futures Command, which has promised faster and more successful modernization programs with a competitive prototyping approach.

GDLS will initially deliver 26 vehicles, but the contract allows the Army to buy another 70 during low-cost production for another $1.14 billion, the Army said.

At least eight of the 12 prototypes used during the competition's evaluation will be updated for entry into force, said service officials responsible for the competition.

The first production vehicles are expected to be delivered within 19 months. The first unit will receive the battalion's MPF systems — 42 vehicles — by the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. The Army plans to implement full-scale production by calendar year 2025, according to GDLS.

"The MPF demonstrates the Army's determination to accelerate acquisition and use all the new approaches and new authorities necessary to modernize," Army Acquisition Chief Doug Bush said at a June 28 media roundtable.

He noted that this is the first major platform to move from prototyping to production under the Army Futures Command, which relies on new rapid prototyping agencies.

"This program is leading the way in this field, and prototyping is not easy. There is a lot of work to be done when you go into low-volume production and then go through operational testing," he said. "But I'm very motivated by the work."

The Army expects to spend about $6 billion on the MPF program through the acquisition phase, according to Brig. gen. Glenn Dean, program executive for the Land Warfare Systems Service. GDLS and BAE Systems - selected in 2018 to build prototypes - competed to produce the MPF. Reports earlier this year indicated that the service had already been chosen, and BAE withdrew from the competition months before announcing the winner.

At the time, Bush said the military evaluated both vehicles fairly and thoroughly, but did not address reports that the military had decided on a winner. Dean declined to discuss the selection process during Tuesday's roundtable, citing the sensitivity of the contest.

The two prototypes are quite different. GDLS introduced a new, lightweight chassis, a high-performance package and advanced suspension, with a turret and the latest version of the anti-fire system found on the Abrams main battle tank.

In a statement to Defense News, BAE Systems said the company "while not selected to move forward with the MPF tender, we will take the innovations and lessons learned from our solution with us and apply them to future modernization efforts."
