The 41st president died at the age of 94 on Friday night after years of battling a rare disease called vascular parkinsonism. The funeral of the former Commander-in-Chief will be held on Wednesday at the Washington National Cathedral.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order declaring Wednesday a Bush Country day of mourning, during which the federal government will shut down. Such events are traditionally held for former presidents on a day that includes a memorial service.

While federal offices will be closed, other Navy and shipyard operations will operate on a limited basis.
Visitor centers in Bremerton, Bangor and Keyport will be closed, along with Naval Base Kitsap and the Family Support Center. However, the fitness centers in Bremerton and Bangor will remain open. The bowling alley, theater and Bremerton and Bangor Aquatic Centers will be closed.
Basic parking offices will be open but only for limited services, such as issuing parking passes and vehicle registration.
Navy Child Care Centers will be open to support military personnel and DoD military personnel who are considered mission critical and must report to a duty station.

The Navy Exchange and Commission will operate normal hours. A number of core restaurants will remain open, including the Trident Inn Galley and the All American Restaurant.
Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, the largest employer at Naval Base Kitsap, declined to comment on which parts of the ship will continue to operate normally.
A number of operations at the Naval Hospital in Bremerton, including all outpatient services - pharmacy, radiology and laboratory services - will be closed on Wednesday.
Hospital operations deemed mission critical will remain open, including the urgent care clinic and inpatient services such as labor and delivery.

Traveling from Seattle to Naval Base Kitsap with the Washington State Ferry can be faster, easier and more fun. There is a daily ferry that takes passengers from Seattle to Bremerton and back several times a day (and overnight).
If you're flying in, you'll land at Seattle-Tacoma Airport. Shuttle service from the airport directly to Naval Base Kitsap is recommended with reservations. Many rental car agencies are available at the airport with motorbikes at off-site locations.
You must have a valid photo ID (DL, CAC card, VA card) and proof of citizenship to access the installation. If you cannot provide proof of citizenship, you will not be allowed access to the base, so plan ahead. Legal forms of citizenship include an enhanced WA driver's license, a valid US birth certificate (not a copy of any form), and a valid US passport or visa card.

Incoming personnel assigned to Naval Base Kitsap must appear on their scheduled date with all required documentation (copy of orders, DA 31, medical and dental records, and military personnel file). When you arrive at Naval Base Kitsap, report to the career office in Bldg. 1100, near the Trident Gate (Bangor's main gate). Duty office staff will help you stay in touch with your order. Note: Although hours of operation are listed until 1520, staff at the Bremerton Visitor Center will close at 1500. If the time is close to 1500, do not go to the office or call.
DEERS Naval Base Kitsap offices are based on an appointment system. Appointments can be made and cards can be renewed before the card expires. There are two law offices at Naval Base Kitsap to choose from. Both provide legal services to service members of the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard and their dependents, as well as non-custodial personnel with active duty over 30 days and retirees on relief permits. There are several towns near Naval Base Kitsap. Bremerton is (obviously) closer to Bremerton on the base side, and Silverdale is closer to the Bangor side. All the towns mentioned below are located along major roads, making it easy to reach the installation.
Bainbridge Island is an island (obviously) in Puget Sound between Seattle and the Kitsap Peninsula. You can easily connect to Seattle by ferry or drive to Kitsap. With a variety of shopping, spectacular views, amazing restaurants and plenty of outdoor activities, living on the island feels like you're on vacation. It's small and charming, and over 25,000 people call it home. Housing is at a premium and scarce, but this is likely due to the excellent schools and high cost of living in the greater Seattle area. There are outdoor activities year-round, including many beaches, parks, and hiking trails.
